How QR Authentication Is Closing the Door on Counterfeit Products

Counterfeiting is usually treated as a supply-chain problem to be solved after the fact โ€” audits, spot checks, and reactive investigations once a fake has already reached a customer. CRD Star takes a different approach: authentication happens at the exact moment a product is used, not weeks later in a warehouse report.

Why the moment of the scan matters

Every CRD Star scratch panel hides a QR code that's unique to a single unit, not a batch or a product line. When it's scanned, that code is checked against the exact registration record created when the manufacturer first registered the product โ€” not a generic database of "products like this one."

"A counterfeit product using a copied QR gets flagged instantly โ€” the pattern shows up in scan behaviour before a single reward is ever paid out."

That distinction is what makes real-time detection possible. A duplicated or cloned QR doesn't just fail silently โ€” it produces a scan pattern the system can recognise: the same code scanned from two different locations close together in time, or a code scanned far more often than a single unit reasonably should be.

What this looks like in practice

A few of the signals CRD Star's verification layer watches for on every scan:

None of this requires the shopper to do anything differently. Scratching and scanning stays exactly as simple as it's meant to be โ€” the verification happens underneath, not as an extra step someone has to complete.

The bigger picture

For manufacturers, this turns authentication from a periodic exercise into a live signal. Instead of waiting for a distributor's report or a customer complaint, unusual patterns show up on the dashboard as they happen โ€” often before a counterfeit run has done much damage at all.
